No solo de ficción vive el hombre, por ello es que la academia tambien premia a las mejores películas documentales del año con un Oscar. Esta práctica se remonta a 1942, año en el que hubo un empate de cuatro documentales.

• Cuando el director Michael Moore se levantó a recoger el Oscar por su documental "Bowling for Columbine" formulo un polémico y breve discurso que se ganó abucheos de parte de la sala, algo totalmente inedito en los Oscars y que solo habia ocurrido con el discurso de Vanesa Redgrave cuando subió a recoger el Oscar a la Mejor Actriz de Reparto. El discurso de Moore fue el siguiente:

"Vivimos en tiempos de ficción, con resultados ficticios de una elección, que elige a un presidente ficticio. Vivimos en un tiempo en el que tenemos a un hombre que nos envía a una guerra por motivos ficticios, ya sea por la ficción de cinta adhesiva. Estamos en contra de la guerra, Sr. Bush nos avergüenza, Sr. Bush nos avergüenza"
